Solar, Battery & Electrical Upgrade — Building Real Off-Grid Capability

The completed electrical upgrade combines expanded roof-mounted solar, 300 Ah LiFePO4 storage, Victron charging, a 2,000 W inverter and DC-DC charging.

The electrical upgrade

One of the most important upgrades to Project Hymer Europe has been the electrical system. The goal was straightforward: give our 2006 Hymer B 614 SL enough charging capacity and stored energy to spend significantly more time away from campsite hookups while keeping the motorhome practical for everyday travel.

More than just adding solar panels

The original roof setup included approximately 200 W of solar. Rather than remove a working panel, the upgrade retained it and added three new 200 W panels, bringing total roof-mounted solar capacity to approximately 800 W. The system is built around a 300 Ah LiFePO4 leisure battery with a JK active BMS, Victron 100/50 MPPT charging, a 2,000 W inverter and DC-DC charging.

Why this matters

Increasing the motorhome’s electrical independence gives Project Hymer Europe more flexibility when using simple campsites, rural stops and off-grid locations where electrical hookups may be unavailable or unnecessary. The expanded roof array can recover energy throughout the day while the LiFePO4 battery provides a large reserve for evenings, poor weather and higher-demand equipment.

Installation complete

The Solar, Battery & Electrical System is now complete and is marked ✓ COMPLETED on the Project Hymer Europe roadmap. The installation work was carried out with Caravanman as the installer / paid supplier, not as a sponsor or project partner.
